The DEDC and DuRA The series of S-1 Workshops culminated in the rollout of the Deep Science report at the National Research Council in November 2007. This rollout was immediately followed by a DUSEL Town Hall Meeting to galvanize the science community. Since the rollout, the DUSEL scientific community has been represented sequentially by two bodies. The DUSEL Experiment Development COmmittee (DEDC) was formed in January 2008 to coordinate the activities of the DUSEL scientific community. We propose that the DEDC transitions to a user's association - the DUSEL Research Association (DuRA) and propose a format for this - we would appreciate the community's help in facilitating this transition. We provide some details below. The DUSEL Experiment Development Committee (DEDC) was established in January 2008 to both coordinate activities of the community in developing a superset of the experimental suite to be housed in DUSEL and to liaise between this community and the Facility. The DEDC acted as an interface between the community, the facility and the NSF during the solicitation, award and initial execution of the S4 awards from NSF. This included the convening of workshops to coordinate experimental plans and in briefing review panels and other interested parties. DURAWith the establishment of S4 awards to the community, the mission of the DEDC was essentially complete, and we propose that the activities of DEDC should transition to a new DUSEL Research Association (DuRA). This Association would comprises the full cadre of members of the DUSEL scientific community with representation by a smaller Executive Committee to liaise with the Facility and with the funding agencies. We appreciate your initial comments on the charter we propose for this research association.
