Biology
Biologists at Sanford Underground Research Facility will search for "dark life" – that is, microorganisms that thrive deep underground and that comprise about 50 percent of the earth's biomass. They'll search for answers to questions such as:
- How deep does life go?
- How do reactions among microorganisms and minerals shape our world?
- Are there previously unknown forms of live underground?
- What are the limits of life in extreme environments?
- Did life originate underground?
- What are the chances of live evolving in extraterrestrial environments?
