Biologists at Sanford Underground Research Facility will search for "dark life" – that is, microorganisms that thrive deep underground and that comprise about 50 percent of the earth's biomass. They'll search for answers to questions such as:

How deep does life go?
How do reactions among microorganisms and minerals shape our world?
Are there previously unknown forms of live underground?
What are the limits of life in extreme environments?
Did life originate underground?
What are the chances of live evolving in extraterrestrial environments?
