Education and Outreach

Artist rendering of the sanford science and education centerThe Sanford Center for Science Education (SCSE) will be the education and outreach arm of the South Dakota Science and Technology Athority. Philanthropist T. Denny Sanford donated $70 million to help convert Homestake into an underground laboratory, and $20 million of that donation will be used to help establish a state-of-the-art science education facility.

Sanford's donation is consistent with the commitment of the National Science Foundation to education and public engagement, and the SCSE will exceed expectations for education and outreach typical of research institutions. The center will provide programs for a range of audiences that will include the general public, educators, scientists, and students of all ages, from kindergarten through graduate school. The mission of the SCSE is to draw upon the science and engineering of SURF, its human resources, its unique facility and its setting within the Black Hills to inspire and prepare future generations of scientists, engineers, and science educators.

Preliminary designs for the surface laboratory include a visitor center and education building on the Yates Campus, overlooking Lead, South Dakota. (Illustrated above.)
