Environment Health and Safety

The Sanford Underground Research Facility is using International Safety Management principles to support the design and construction of an underground laboratory that controls hazards to personnel, the environment and property and that complies with all applicable codes and regulations.

The Sanford Underground Laboratory at Homestake is currently operated by the South Dakota Science and Technology Authority. (See the Sanford Lab EH&S link in the right-hand column.) We are developing a best practices safety program drawing on multiple sources, including the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA).

SURF also is complying with the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA).
