S4 Proposals
The National Science Foundation's Solicitation 4 (S4) called for proposals to develop designs and pursue targeted research and development for candidates for the initial suite of DUSEL experiments. Sixteen proposals were selected from among 25 submissions.
Nine proposals were funded in physics, for a total of $21 million over three years:
EXO (Double Beta Decay) - Enriched Xenon Observatory
GE1T (Double Beta Decay) - 1 ton Germanium Experiment
MAX (Dark Matter) - Multi-ton Particle Detector
LZ20 (Dark Matter) - 20-ton Liquid Xenon Experiment
GEODM (Dark Matter) - 1.5-ton Germanium Detector
COUPP (Dark Matter) - Continuously Sensitive Bubble Chamber
LBNE (Neutrino Oscillation) - Long Baseline Neutrino Experiment
DIANA (Nuclear Astrophysics) - Dakota Ion Accelerators for Nuclear Astrophysics
FAARM (Low Background Assay) - Facility for Assay and Acquisition of Radiopure Materials
Seven proposals were funded in biology, geology and engineering, for a total of $3 million of three years:
Transparent Earth (Geoscience) - Subsurface Imaging and Sensing
Fiber-Optic Array (Geoscience)- Fiber-Optic Strain Monitoring of Rock
EAGER (Geoscience) - Earthquake Rupture Experiment (Fault Rupture)
THMC (Geoscience/Biology) - Coupled thermal, hydrological, mechanical and chemical processes.
CO2 (Energy/Biology) - Carbon Sequestration
EcoHydro (Biology) - Deep EcoHydrology
Monitoring - Cavern Design for DUSEL
